Subway Movie: Death Proof…

Last year, if you remember, there was a double feature called Grindhouse.  So of course, i downloaded both movies from it.  I watched the first one, Planet Terror.  It sucked.  A lot.  And i honestly thought it was going to be the better one of the two.  Sucked.

So i kept putting off the second feature, Death Proof.  I thought it was going to be the same crapfest that Planet Terror was.  But holy crap.  I was so wrong.  I actually think it could be one of my favorite movies ever.  How can i tell that i loved it so much?  I was watching on the subway on the ride home.  I proceeded to walk the entire way from the train to my apartment watching it as i walked.  Walked up 4 flights of stairs to get to my apartment door…still watching.  Then plopped down on the couch and continued to watch it until it was over.  And at the end, i laughed and yelled “no way!”   Best ending ever to a movie.

But i will say.  Im sure this isnt a movie for everyone.  But was absolutely fantastic for me.  I never really “got” Quentin Tarantino.  I really liked kill bill.  But other than that, i always thought….”meh”.  But i get him now.  It was meant to be one of those cheesy type drive in movies.  Parts of the film i thought “this must just be the copy that i downloaded.  the color keeps cutting in and out.  and its very choppy.”  But that was the point of it all.  There is one scene that takes place in all black and white….then suddenly, is in color.  And it REALLY makes you go “wow”.  The colors that are in reality, you would never guess were there while watching black and white.  It was very smart and brilliantly done.

And not to mention “the girls”.  The basic premise of the movie is that there is this man that goes around and stalks these groups of girls with his stunt car.  It is death proof for him, because it was protected and meant to do stunts.  But he uses it as a weapon.  I think ALL of these girls (Zoe Bell, Rosario Dawson,Vanessa Ferlito, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Tracie Thoms, Rose McGowan, Jordan Ladd, Mary Elizabeth Winstead) were so good….and super hot.  There is a lot of crap conversations that go on, that have nothing at all to do with the movie.  But it really makes you understand what type of characters each of these girls are.  In such a short time, you feel like you know what theyre all about.  And granted, it might be from stupid conversation.  But it works.

I think everyone should give this movie a shot.  Yes…you may end up thinking “why did i just watch this”.  But on the flip side….you may end up thinking the same thing as me.  And thinking its just brilliant.
